DVSA ADI
We are proud to boast we can prepare you for the qualification of DVSA ADI.
There are three parts of qualifying exams.
ADI Part 1 Theory:
The first part consists of multiple choice questions banded into four sections and a hazard perception test. The overall pass mark is 85% (i.e. you will be asked 100 questions and you need to get at least 85 correct), but you must achieve a minimum mark of 80% in each of the four sections. For example, you can get 100% in bands 1, 2 and 3 and 75% in band 4 but you’d fail because you didn’t reach the minimum 80% level in band 4.
You have 90 minutes to complete the exam.
There are over 900 different questions in the question bank covered within the below bands. This gives you an overall broad knowledge.

ADI Part 2 Advanced Driving
Advanced driving tests demand a very high level of skill. You’ll drive using a safe, methodical system that allows you to make progress whenever possible.
You must not display any signs on your vehicle to show that you’re on a test. You must not make more than 6 driver faults within one hour of driving and faults can be picked up more easily than on a Learner driving test. As aforementioned, the test is about one hour long and covers a variety of roads which could include motorways depending on Testing Centre location.
You will have to pass:
- An eyesight test. The requirement is:
- You must be able to read in good daylight a motor vehicle registration mark containing letters and figures which are: 79mm in height by 50mm wide from a distance of 26.5m OR. 79mm in height by 57mm wide from a distance of 27.5m/90 feet.
- 2 show me questions and 3 tell me questions (see my show me/ tell me page)
- 2 of 4 slow manoeuvres such as parallel parking and maybe an emergency stop. Independent driving using a satellite navigation system or following traffic signs.
You only have three attempts at part 2. If you fail three times, you’ll have to wait for two years from the date you passed part 1 before you can start the taking exams again, beginning with part one.
Quality tuition and coaching from an experienced advanced and skilled Trainer is essential before attempting this test.
ADI Part 3 instructional Ability.
The ADI Part 3 Instructional Ability Test – what’s it all about?
The purpose of this test is to assess your ability to deliver a client-centred driving lesson.
The test lasts around an hour. During the test a specially trained DVSA senior examiner will observe you giving a driving lesson to either a full licence holder or a learner driver. It’s up to you which one of the two types of pupil you bring to the exam. Then a further 20 hours of training will be given to you should you decide to take out a 6 month Trainee (PINK) licence. The The person cannot be another driving instructor or someone who is training you to be a driving instructor.
ACDAL will provide you with a home study pack which includes a workbook and DVD. We will also provide you with 40 hours of in-car tuition and will ensure that you are ready to take your test and become an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor). Should you decide to take out a 6 month Trainee (PINK) Licence, then a further 20 hours of training will be given during the Trainee licence period.
The examiner will look for evidence you have been able to demonstrate a high-standard of client -centred learning and will mark you in 17 areas of competence that are grouped into 3 categories.
